Undergraduate Student Grants and Awards

Undergraduate International Experiences Grants

General Focus: to encourage the international travel of students in connection with study, research, internships, field work, and service-learning.

Deadlines: All application materials must be submitted by the appropriate deadline:

  • October 31 – Winter Break, Winter Quarter, Spring Break, and Spring Quarter
  • Funding availability and application guidelines for Summer and Autumn Quarter 2010 travel will be posted in January

Application Process: In order to be considered, the following must be received by the appropriate deadline.

  • Undergraduate International Experiences Grant Application
  • Statement of purpose (300 words or less) that outlines your plans for travel abroad and discusses the relevance of your proposed travel in relation to your academic and professional goals.
  • Letter of recommendation from an OSU faculty member attesting to his/her knowledge of your travel plans and the relevance of your travel in relation to your academic and/or professional goals.
  • Detailed budget including airfare, program expenses, living expenses, insurance, etc.

Submission Process: Please e-mail the application form and all supporting documents to Ann Rottersman, Director of Student and Alumni Programs, rottersman.1@osu.edu.

Funding: This fund will support approximately 20 awards at up to $1000 each for winter and spring travel.

Selection Process: Grants are awarded on a competitive basis.

In countries under a current Department of State Travel Warning, undergraduate students cannot use scholarship awards for study abroad programs and/or individual international projects outside of venues approved by Ohio State. International Research Grants for Undergraduates in the Arts and Sciences

General Focus: to encourage students to engage in research in international venues with their faculty mentors.

Deadlines: November 13, 2009 and March 1, 2010

Application Process: Faculty are encouraged to apply for a grant to support an undergraduate student who can benefit from participation in research abroad. The online application cover sheet may be completed by a faculty member in the Arts and Sciences. The information provided should:

  • include a description of the research project and the international experience (can include conference presentation)
  • indicate the projected timeline for the project and travel abroad
  • articulate in some detail the form and nature of the student’s involvement in the research project. If available, the grounds for the student selection and a brief biographical sketch of the student should be included.
  • Include a budget page with information about the proposed use of funds requested for student support and provide documentation about any other resources available to the student (accommodation, faculty grant support, etc.).

Funding: Faculty may apply for up to $4,000 for student support. Funds will be provided for one student. In 2008-09, the maximum amount available for this fund is $20,000. The Undergraduate Research Scholarship Subcommittee of the Arts and Sciences Honors Committee will determine the level of funding for each grant awarded, as well as the number of awards to be distributed based on merit review criteria. Special attention will be paid to the appropriateness and value of the educational experience for the student participant.

In countries under a current Department of State Travel Warning, undergraduate students cannot use scholarship awards for study abroad programs and/or individual international projects outside of venues approved by Ohio State. Graduate and professional students may petition the Study Abroad Health and Safety Committee for approval a minimum of three months prior to proposed travel. Scholarships
Reusché Scholarships

General Focus: to support high achieving students in the arts and sciences Scholars Programs (Arts; Biological Sciences; Humanities; Politics, Society, and Law) who have financial need.

Timing: Spring Quarter

Selection Process: In consultation with the Financial Aid Office and on the recommendation of the program coordinator, the ASC Office of the Executive Dean will annually select scholarship recipients from each of the arts and sciences Scholars Programs.

Funding: The Reusché Scholarship Fund will support 20 one-time awards per year at $1,250 each.

 

Rising Star Awards

General Focus: to recognize students in the arts and sciences at the completion of their first year at Ohio State who have participated actively in the ASC Diversity Services Office (DSO) programs.

Deadline: April 15.

Nomination Process: This award is administered by the ASC Diversity Services Office. For additional information and the application form, go to the Rising Star Award information page.

Any arts and sciences student who has participated actively in DSO programs may self nominate by completing the online self-nomination form.
